What is JIDAI-

It is big era picture scroll which dates back from the Meiji Period to the Heian Period and takes place from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to the Heian Shrine. The date of the festival was changed to 22nd October in annual.
What’s origin?
On the March 1895, this time falls on after 1,100 year which the relocation of the capital to Heian. In this month, the Heian Shrine was built as a shrine sacred Kanmu emperor. People thought they are going to celebrate on a large scale this. So they suggested they hold the era procession which represents change of custom. First festival was held on 25th October 1895.
History of the festival
The first festival’s procession is only six. But, it’s procession increased year after year. During the war, it was stopped and end of the war, it revived. Now, it was added the women procession.

Characteristic of the festival
In the festival, people who impersonate colored person of era walk the main road. The Muromati period was joined the procession in 2007. The procession is composed by 20 line, 2000 person and over 70 cows or horses. Total length is about 20km.
